Winter Solstice 2009

It's that time of year again, and the coming of Yule brings with it all the inevitable frustrations of winter; cold toes, scraping ice from windscreens, town centres packed to bursting with shoppers.

But, of course, there are the truly great things too: spending time with family, long evenings snuggled under blankets, soup and hot bread, making decorations, singing, roast chestnuts. I love this time of year, and I hope you're all making the most of it and managing to keep warm. And remember your pets, maybe your dog needs an extra blanket or your rabbits need more bedding.

Yule is such a magical time, with everyone so full of hope and ambitions for the future, looking forward to the lengthening days of spring and the return of flowers and birds to our gardens.

The Solstice this year will occur on 21st December at 17.47 GMT

The world 'solstice' comes from the Latin solstitium meaning 'Sun stands still' because the apparent movement of the Sun's path north or south stops before changing direction.

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year, and the longest night. But it is a time of celebration, as the Solstice is the turn of the year, when the Sun comes back into force with the days getting gradually longer as we look towards Spring.

Bring greenery into your house on the Solstice; decorate your home with holly, ivy and mistletoe. You can make wreaths and strings, and it's a great way to get children away from the tv!

If you have a wood burner or open fire, bring in a yule log. You can write hopes and wishes for the year ahead onto bayleaves and burn them with the log.
